Ontario Premier Doug Ford is considering implementing 'Buy Ontario' legislation in response to looming tariffs from the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Tuesday will mark the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods, with energy products facing a reduced 10 percent levy. In light of these developments, Ford is exploring several measures to bolster Ontario's economy and protect local industries.
The Ontario government aims to prioritize local products within its $30 billion annual procurement. This move aligns with Ford's assertion that Ontario is capable of producing anything needed within the province. Municipalities, which manage their own sourcing, are also encouraged to support this initiative. Ford indicated that he intends to legislate the 'Buy Ontario' approach to ensure compliance across all sectors.
“So please, please work with us, or we’re going to legislate it. And start onshoring goods from – you’re bringing (goods) around the world – there’s nothing we can’t build here in Ontario, absolutely nothing.” – Doug Ford
In a bid to counteract the expected economic impact of the U.S. tariffs, Ontario plans to cease nickel shipments to the United States, potentially disrupting manufacturing processes there. Moreover, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario will remove American alcohol from its shelves, and a $100-million agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX for Starlink internet services in remote areas will be terminated.
“On the critical minerals, I will stop shipments going into the U.S. for nickel. It will shut down manufacturing.” – Doug Ford
Energy Minister Stephen Lecce is contemplating a surcharge on every megawatt of energy exported to the U.S., further intensifying Ontario's retaliatory measures. The province is also looking into the possibility of onshoring goods from global sources as part of its strategy to enhance domestic procurement.
Ford emphasized the need for unity among municipalities, urging them to prioritize Ontario and Canadian products. He acknowledged that some goods may be difficult to source locally but stressed that a shift in procurement practices would have significant repercussions for American businesses.
“I know all 444 municipalities are on board, but we’re going to make sure we legislate it, that you’re buying Ontario first, Canada second,” – Doug Ford
“I get it. There’s some products you just aren’t able to get. I get it, but I’ll tell you one thing, we start shifting it, (Americans) are going to feel the pain.” – Doug Ford
Ford remains resolute in his stance, warning that if the U.S. attempts to undermine Ontario's economy, he will take decisive action.
“If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything, including cut off their energy with a smile on my face.” – Doug Ford
