Newton House Respite Care Closure Paused Amidst Community Outcry

Newton House, a vital respite care facility in Bath, Somerset, has faced a temporary halt in its planned closure following significant community backlash. The facility, operated by Dimensions, an independent registered housing association, provides essential short-term stays for individuals with complex needs and disabilities. Initially set to close by the end of January due to being "unviable" at 60% capacity, the closure has been paused to allow time for finding alternative arrangements for the 22 families dependent on its services.

Dimensions announced its intention to transform Newton House into a residential care home. However, this decision has sparked concern and action from the local community. Councillor Alison Born, cabinet member for adult services, confirmed the delay in closure, highlighting the council's commitment to ensuring families are not left without support.

Richard Franklin from Keynsham initiated an online petition advocating for the facility's survival. To date, over 2,400 individuals have backed the petition. Franklin emphasized the critical role Newton House plays, stating, "Without Newton House, our lives won't function." He further remarked on the growing difficulty of caring for his son Ryan as they age:

"As we get older, we find it physically harder to handle Ryan as he gets bigger," – Richard Franklin

The facility serves as a crucial lifeline for many families, offering much-needed breaks for full-time carers. The respite provided by Newton House is indispensable to their well-being. Franklin expressed his frustration at how the situation has been managed:

"[Newton House] is a total lifeline that just gives us a break. They should hang their heads in shame with how this has been handled." – Richard Franklin

Councillor Lesley Mansell also voiced her dismay during a council meeting, revealing personal struggles with limited sleep due to caring responsibilities. Her reaction to the news of the closure reflected the broader community sentiment:

"I am absolutely shocked and horrified at the information that we have been given today from the members of the public." – Lesley Mansell

The closure plans initially remained undisclosed to adult social services for nearly a year after Dimensions informed the council. This communication gap delayed awareness and response to the impending changes.
