New Youth Centre Set to Transform Grimsby Community

Grimsby residents are happy their community will soon be home to a new youth centre! The Horizon Youth Zone has been created with capital funding of £8.6 million. The new youth center will serve as a calming, supportive space for youth ages eight to 19. The Horizon Youth Zone is due to open its doors in February 2026. This amazing new facility is part of the OnSide network, a charity that has been working to build independent youth centers across the UK.

Local teenagers Jake Tinmurth, 18, and Will Owen, 19, have already been instrumental in shaping their new Horizon Youth Zone. Their efforts have been integral in guiding the collective’s overall vision. Their engagement has helped to guarantee that when the centre opens, it will accurately reflect the needs and wants of the borough’s young people. The centre is located on the historic West Haven Maltings and Migar House site. This beautiful Grade II listed building certainly stands out in the middle of Grimsby.

Membership for the future Horizon Youth Zone opened in November, with hundreds of young people already signing up. The annual membership fee is just £5, with sessions provided at a subsidised rate of 50 pence per session. This low-cost pricing scheme is to ensure the community centre remains affordable and open to all local youths.

The new Horizon Youth Zone intends to provide an expansive range of activities from sports, arts, and music facilities to general social spaces. It hopes to connect over 4,000 youth in its inaugural year of operation. For artist Tinmurth, who worked on the project, this was a dream come true. He had immense pride in being on the team that created it.

“It feels amazing, it’s like a building I’ve made with a group of amazing people. I feel proud of this building and I put a lot of work in and I feel it will impact young people around Grimsby. We will be a youth voice for Horizon.” – Jake Tinmurth

As Will Owen further mentioned, this centre will be important in continuing to provide a safe space for youth.

“It’s not just a building – it’s a place where young people can feel safe and supported.” – Will Owen

The Horizon Youth Zone is a heart-warming story of investment in the future of Grimsby’s young people. This dynamic program provides top notch arts and sports programming to at-risk youth. Even more, it spurs creativity that nurtures individual development and provides a stronger sense of connectiveness within community.
