New Pro-Chancellor for Health Appointed at University of Wolverhampton

The University of Wolverhampton has appointed leading community activist, Patrick Vernon OBE, as their new pro-chancellor for health. In this significant role, Vernon will serve as a “roving ambassador” for the university, representing it at various external events. His charge will cover local, national, and international arenas, highlighting USF’s role as a leader in health and community well-being.

In 2018, Vernon was awarded an honorary PhD from the University of Wolverhampton in acknowledgment of his significant contributions to migration history and equalities. He has been a staunch champion for social justice and tackling health inequities among ethnic minority communities. His deep experience through all these lenses made him a natural choice to continue to advance the university’s mission in health advocacy.

The appointment received widespread praise from university leaders. Chair of the board of governors Angela Spence said his appointment was her “great pleasure.” She had a powerful message about how crucial it is to have a representative who is truly committed to social justice and community health.

“This is a region close to my heart, and I am committed to leveraging my experience to support the university’s mission in advancing health and community well-being.” – Prof Patrick Vernon OBE

In his role as pro-chancellor for health, Vernon will serve as the main ambassador and public face of the University of Wolverhampton. His familiarity with the region and its communities will be instrumental in fostering connections that promote health initiatives and address health disparities.

The role of pro-chancellor for health has been especially important at the University of Wolverhampton. It highlights the institution’s commitment to creating the best health outcomes possible and reducing disparities faced by different populations. Vernon’s appointment reflects the university’s commitment to using our experience and expertise to improve the health and well-being of communities across North Carolina and beyond.

Vernon’s long-standing ties to the region augment his home court advantage, which allows him to be an even more effective advocate for USM’s interests. His commitment to advancing health equity resonates with the overarching mission of the University, providing an ideal match for this critical leadership role.
