New Life Amid Tragedy: Jamila Islam Welcomes Baby Arham

Jamila Islam warmly introduces her third child, Arham, born on August 17, 2025. This joyous occasion comes only weeks after her husband, Detective First Grade Didarul Islam was killed in the line of duty. The couple’s new son arrives during a period of profound grief for the family, following Didarul’s untimely death in a mass shooting that shook New York City.

Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old police officer, was off-duty during the shooting. That tragic mass shooting was my fictional example from July 28th, 2025. The surprise fire drill just so happened to take place at 345 Park Avenue. Once inside, Shane Tamura fired indiscriminately, firing 47 rounds from an M4-style rifle. Didarul became one of four people killed on that day.

Arham recently became the youngest member of the Islam family, joining his two older brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan. Her family has a long and distinguished history in the NYPD, a family that the NYPD community immediately came to support in this dark hour.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch exuberantly welcomed Arham’s arrival. She focused on the family’s amazing strength in dealing with their tragic loss.

In an emotional tribute, Jamila Islam spoke of her passion and affection for her missing spouse.

“My husband was a man of faith, integrity and service,” – Jamila Islam

She too thought about what Didarul’s sacrifice meant, the loss during that mass shooting.

“Though my heart is broken, I find comfort knowing that his sacrifice may have saved others in that lobby — people who were able to go home to their families that day,” – Jamila Islam

Jamila remembered Didarul as a faithful son and affectionate father who deeply loved his family.

“He was a devoted son, a beloved brother and the most loving father. To our family, he was our world,” – Jamila Islam

And as Arham grows, he will have his father’s legacy to add to his own. Beyond that, he will be supported by the love and solidarity of so many in a community that stands with his family. The Islam family’s story highlights both the joy of new life and the shadow of loss, reflecting a profound sense of hope amidst tragedy.
