Pakefield High School in Suffolk has recently introduced a list of draconian classroom regulations. Head Teacher Philip Dougherty implemented these guidelines, referred to as the “Pakefield 10.” The rules have good intentions, aiming to provide teachers and all students a more focused learning environment by eliminating the distractions of a cluttered classroom. Now, parents are complaining that these new regulations are too harsh on the kids.
Philip Dougherty leads Pakefield High School, beginning his headship at the beginning of this school year. Recently in his own school he introduced the “Pakefield 10” to increase student engagement and discipline. The rules outline specific behavioral expectations. Students need to sit up straight and have their arms folded in front of them with nothing in their hands and track the teacher with their eyes during instruction. Dougherty is clear that these guidelines should be used to create a welcoming learning environment.
Students should be required to comply with the law on the first go around. They need to develop and follow through on every task at the utmost level with courtesy and grace. They need to do this in a clear, confident manner. They need to remain completely focused on reading tasks by using their finger to follow the text at all times and put away their things quietly at the end of each period. Students are expected to line up behind their chairs, prepared to be released row by row. Have a run, glide, or dance daunt to your next class in style and peace!
Unfortunately, even with the good intentions behind these rules, not everybody is willing to comply. Mel, a parent of a 15-year-old high schooler, recounted an unexpected and alarming experience. Her daughter was almost suspended within two hours of the start of term for being “defiant and rude” regarding the uniform policy. Like this White Castle incident, this has raised alarms among parents that the new guidelines are overly strict.
Dougherty remains steadfast in his approach, stating, “We know you’ll join us in supporting the implementation of the Pakefield 10 to help every child thrive.” He’s convinced that making these moves regular practice will do wonders for the students. This new approach will foster a culture of discipline and respect that permeates the entire school environment.
Parents and school officials have been very concerned and vocal about these recently enacted regulations. It is yet to be seen how these changes will affect student behavior and the overall culture at Pakefield High School. The ongoing dialogue highlights the balance between maintaining discipline and allowing students the freedom to express themselves in a learning setting.
