In 2021, Kevin and Michael embarked on a profound journey through surrogacy, a path chosen by many couples, including two-thirds of mixed-sex applicants in their 30s or 40s seeking parental orders. Parental orders in England and Wales have seen a significant rise, climbing from 117 in 2011 to 413 in 2020. Despite the increase, navigating the surrogacy landscape remains complex due to UK laws established in 1985, which prohibit commercial surrogacy but allow for the payment of expenses. Documenting their journey on YouTube, Kevin and Michael aimed to demystify this process for others.
Surrogacy laws in the UK present a unique set of challenges. While the laws are straightforward, many find accessing information difficult. Sarah Jones, CEO of Surrogacy UK, notes that much of the guidance is geared towards the US commercial model.
"The laws around surrogacy are really straightforward, it is really hard to find that information because I think everything is geared up towards US surrogacy and the commercial model." – Ms Jones
Kevin and Michael's experience highlights the intricate emotions involved in surrogacy. They describe it as a humbling journey, emphasizing the importance of the bond formed with their surrogate. They maintain a close relationship with her, considering her a lifelong part of their family.
"The whole ethos of surrogacy is friendship first. She is going to be a part of our lives forever. She's definitely a special auntie. We do feel we are bonded for life." – Mr Pittuck-Bennett
Despite these personal stories, surrogacy remains controversial. Helen Gibson, founder of the campaign group Surrogacy Concern, argues against the practice due to perceived exploitation risks.
"We don't support surrogacy for anyone, we understand that a lot of people want to have a genetic child of their own, but it is very exploitative for women." – Helen Gibson
Kevin and Michael, however, emphasize the importance of autonomy for surrogates.
"Of course they should have the power, it's their body." – Mr Pittuck-Bennett
Their surrogate was compensated for expenses incurred, aligning with UK legalities while avoiding profit-based arrangements. This approach underscores the commitment to ethical practices within the bounds of UK law.
The couple's initiative to share their story on YouTube serves as a resourceful guide for others exploring similar paths. Kevin Pittuck-Bennett believes that sharing their lived experience can provide crucial insights for those considering surrogacy.
"I'm not a professional expert, but I've lived it and done it." – Ms Jones
