Nationwide Recall of Bologna Lunch Meat Announced by Gaiser’s European Style Provisions

Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc., a wholesale grocer based in Clifton, NJ, is recalling over 143,000 pounds of bologna salad. The FDA press release explains the recall as being related to misbranding. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a public health advisory. They were particularly concerned that some products contained undeclared meat or poultry ingredient sources.

The recall affects more than 200 ready-to-eat meat and poultry bologna items. That includes items like packages marked BABUSHKA’S RECIPE CHICKEN BOLOGNA. The labels on these products bear the USDA mark of inspection number “5385.” They fail to properly disclose that they contain pork and other meat sources.

FSIS only became aware of this issue after receiving one complaint through the Office of Inspector General’s hotline. Upon receiving the notification, FSIS moved quickly to lead an investigation. They acknowledged that their products contained source materials that were not disclosed on their labels.

“FSIS investigated the complaint and determined that the products contained source materials that were not declared on the label,” stated a representative from FSIS.

FSIS is classifying this recall as Class III, meaning the possibility of adverse health effects is remote. They warn consumers who might have bought these products to be very careful and avoid them. Today, an FSIS representative confirmed that they do not anticipate any negative health effects due to the Class III recalled products. If you or someone you know is concerned about illness, it’s important to contact a health care professional.

Consumers are advised check home refrigerators for the recalled products. All products included in this recall should be discarded or returned to the retailer where purchased for a full refund.
