Black Sheep Egg Company has announced a voluntary recall of more than 6 million eggs for potential Salmonella contamination. On October 2, the firm made its big announcement. In response, they estimated the number of eggs for sale and assured that those eggs are safe to eat. The recall covers eggs sent to retail locations throughout the Houston, Texas area and other areas in Southeast Texas, Western Arkansas, and Southwestern Missouri.
The recall comes after the detection of 40 environmental samples positive for Salmonella from Black Sheep Egg Company locations. Within these samples were seven distinct strains of the bacteria, three of which are known to make humans sick. The company has been proactive in their communications with their direct customers to ensure that all potentially contaminated products are removed from the market.
Details of the Recall

There are several other areas of concern that have prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to act. They request that consumers check their cartons for certain Julian dates and UPC codes printed on the label to confirm they do not possess potentially contaminated products.
Health Risks Associated with Salmonella
Salmonella is one of the most dangerous and prevalent pathogens, leading to an estimated 1.35 million infections each year in the United States alone. These infections mostly occur from food contamination, often causing debilitating gastroenteritis symptoms. Symptoms usually develop within six hours to six days of exposure and symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Though the average person will get better on their own without any treatment, usually in four to seven days, certain strains can cause more severe complications.
At Black Sheep Egg Company, we understand the seriousness of the issue and pride ourselves in even tougher food safety standards. In their latest press release, they reaffirm their commitment to producing the best products while protecting consumers.
