Mother Transforms Cancer Struggle into Children’s Book to Foster Open Conversations

Priyanka Pandya-Bhatt, diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer at the age of 36, has turned her challenging journey into a heartfelt children's book. During her rigorous treatment, which included a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and reconstructive surgery, Priyanka authored "When Mummy Had Cancer." The book was inspired by her daughters, Keya and Shriyana, who were deeply affected by her illness.

Priyanka felt her daughters missed out on her care and attention during her treatment. She wanted to create a tool for open conversations about cancer and its impact on families, especially in the South Asian community where such topics are often stigmatized. She believes that it is crucial to move away from this stigma and address the emotional needs of families facing similar challenges.

"I think the questions that I've incorporated into this book would help any family in any situation." – Priyanka Pandya-Bhatt

Supported by her husband, Manoj Bhatt, Priyanka navigated through the difficult period with a focus on honesty and communication. Her daughters' resilience and confidence inspired her throughout the process. She emphasized the importance of open dialogue with children during such times.

Lorna Russell, an expert in family communication, echoed Priyanka's sentiments about the significance of transparency.

"Talking to children openly and honestly is really important as they can pick up on things really quickly." – Lorna Russell

"Whilst it's a conversation no parent wants to have, sitting down and letting the child know what's going on, and allowing them to ask questions about anything they don't understand, can help them feel like they have a bit more control in what is a really difficult situation for everyone." – Lorna Russell

Priyanka's book aims to serve as a tool to facilitate open conversations and help families navigate the complexities of cancer.

"A tool, to have open conversations and help families." – Priyanka Pandya-Bhatt

After two trying years, Priyanka received the "all clear" from her doctors in October 2023 and now finds herself in a positive place. Her book stands as a testament to the strength and positivity that emerged from this challenging period.

"It's brought something very positive out of two very difficult years that were horrific." – Priyanka Pandya-Bhatt
