Miley Cyrus has officially released her new song, “End of the World.” This release signifies the first single from her forthcoming debut full-length album, “Something Beautiful.” This album is the perfect follow up to their dynamic history in the music world. She’s already released her spoken word piece “Prelude” and her jazz-pop-metal fusion song “Something Beautiful” which have both thrilled and confused her fan base.
“End of the World” grapples with the tension between the very real promise of the apocalypse and the importance of living in the moment anyway. Cyrus’ lyrics remind listeners to hold onto their loved ones, even as they’re forewarned of what’s to come. One notable line captures this sentiment:
“Let’s pretend that it’s not the end of the world / The sky is falling, falling like a comet now / I can see it coming down,”
The song is filled with references to other historic heavyweights of our American music. And there’s a cute song called “Paul McCartney” which presents his youthful crush on Beatleness in a celebratory spirit very much in the infamous Macca tradition. In one verse, she suggests:
“Let’s spend the dollars you’ve been saving on a Mercedes Benz / And throw a party like McCartney with some help from our friends.”
Hers is a complex love letter to the place, and her tempestuous history with Malibu provides a brilliant backdrop for her emotional journey. She followed up in 2017 by dropping “Malibu,” an open-armed love song to her connection with then-spouse Liam Hemsworth. Tragically, the horrific 2018 Woolsey Fire lost the couple’s shared home in Malibu. This loss casts a veil of nostalgia over her recent works.
Cyrus previewed “End of the World” during an invitation-only showcase at Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont earlier this spring. At last, the long-awaited release of that song has come. For those able to attend, this intimate experience featured the multi-hyphenate at the top of her transformative game.
Cyrus is still raising creative standards as she prepares to release her fourth studio album, “Something Beautiful,” May 30. The album is referred to as a “visual album.” It’s packaged with a feature film, hitting theaters in June, that offers fans an interactive experience like nothing they’ve ever seen before.
