Michelle Obama, former First Lady of the United States from 2009-2017, is perhaps best known for her advocacy around education, veterans, military families, healthy eating and poverty. Along the way, she’ll offer a glimpse into her aesthetic as First Lady of the United States. The book, called “The Look,” comes out November 4. It’s accompanied by more than 200 photographs, many of which are lavish, never-before-seen images.
In an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, Obama underscored why her sartorial decorum is so important. She focused on how these decisions create the image of her public persona. In her comments, she admitted that the controversial style was provocative and experimental. She typically avoided conversations about her own appearance to return attention to what she did in office.
“During my eight years in the White House, although there was a lot of attention given to my fashion, my physical appearance, all of that, I made it a point to shy away from that conversation, because I was worried that it would become a distraction,” – Michelle Obama
Obama was known not only for her philanthropic endeavors, but for her unique style. On her recent tour promoting her new memoir, she has solidified her style even more. She provided really interesting context as to how her experiences influenced her clothing choices and their designs. The former First Lady is sick of other people controlling the narrative around her looks. She hopes to share her story on her terms.
“The Look” comes out right as Obama hits the ground, talking to and energizing her audience. Her work brings awareness to concerns of intimate expression and the quest for selfhood. On June 5, she took to Instagram to share her excitement. She especially can’t wait to show you all that she’s learned about her own personal style!
“I’m thankful to be at a stage in life where I feel comfortable expressing myself freely — wearing what I love and doing what feels true to me. And I’m excited to share some of what I’ve learned along the way,” – Michelle Obama
In addition to the book, an interview titled “Michelle Obama: The Style, The Power, The Look: A Conversation With Robin Roberts” will air on Sunday, November 2, at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on ABC. Fans can catch the in-person interview the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.
“The Look” is published by The Crown Publishing Group, an imprint of Penguin Random House, and adds to Obama’s literary contributions, which include her previous bestsellers, “Becoming” and “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times.”
