McLaren Secures Oscar Piastri in Long-Term Deal Ahead of F1 Season Opener

McLaren Racing announced a significant extension to Oscar Piastri's contract as they prepare for the Formula 1 season opener at Albert Park. The young Australian driver, who debuted with the British-based team in 2023, had his contract extended beyond 2026. The announcement follows similar extensions for key figures within the team, including Chief Executive Zak Brown, Team Principal Andrea Stella, and Piastri's teammate Lando Norris. The specifics of Piastri's new deal remain undisclosed.

The news comes just days before the first practice session on Friday for Sunday's race. Piastri, who earned victories in Hungary and Azerbaijan last season, is seen as a critical component of McLaren's future success. The 23-year-old aims to be a contender for the title this year, bolstering the team's aspirations following their first constructors' championship since 1998.

Zak Brown expressed his confidence in Piastri's role within the team, emphasizing his contributions both on and off the track.

"We’ve got the best driver line-up on the grid, and in the past two seasons, we’ve seen how much of an asset to the team Oscar is both on and off track." – Zak Brown

Piastri's extension aligns with McLaren's long-term vision, which includes retaining competitive talent to secure future championships. Lando Norris, last season's runner-up to Red Bull's Max Verstappen, signed his contract extension in January 2024.

Piastri himself expressed enthusiasm about being part of McLaren’s future endeavors.

"Therefore, I’m very proud to be continuing to represent this legendary team for many years to come." – Oscar Piastri

As Piastri approaches his 24th birthday next month, he remains committed to McLaren, a team he describes as a perfect fit. His work ethic and integration into the team’s culture have made him an invaluable member of the McLaren family.

"Not only is he an incredibly talented driver, but his work ethic and cultural fit within the team made it a no-brainer to extend his time in papaya (McLaren’s colours)," – Zak Brown
