Mattel Unveils Barbie Doll Representing Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes

Mattel recently released a new Barbie doll that depicts what it’s like to live with Type 1 diabetes. This is a huge step towards fulfillment of their pledge to be inclusive. This revelation took place at the 2025 Children’s Congress—a gathering of Breakthrough T1D activists in Washington, D.C. Attendees rejoiced not only at the fantastic progress made in awareness and representation for this often invisible chronic condition.

This new Barbie to be released represents representation. It raises awareness for the nearly 2 million people in the U.S. living with T1D, including about 304,000 children and teens under 20 years old. The doll features a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) affixed to her arm and a smartphone displaying an app to manage diabetes, illustrating the tools necessary for those managing this condition.

A Step Towards Inclusivity

Mattel’s initiative to introduce a Barbie that reflects the realities of living with Type 1 diabetes aligns with their broader efforts to enhance inclusivity among their diverse range of dolls. This decision follows on the heels of the thrilling introduction of a Barbie doll with Down syndrome earlier this year. Beyond looking great, it signals the brand’s genuine commitment to accurately representing all communities.

The purpose of this new Barbie’s design is to help “truly capture the community” of people who live with Type 1 diabetes. The stylish blue polka dot ensemble that the doll is wearing today consists of a matching top and skirt. This engaging approach resonates with kids and their families, while drawing much-needed attention to a critical health concern.

The awareness they generate helps build support for the unrestricted, long-term basic science and other resources required by T1D-affected researchers.
