The Maldives has imposed a ban on Israeli passport holders from entering the country, following a cabinet recommendation. Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced this decision on Sunday, condemning an Israeli airstrike on a displaced camp in Rafah, which resulted in the deaths of at least 45 Palestinians and injured over 200. The island nation, known for its luxury resorts and pristine beaches, is taking a stance amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
President Muizzu's decision reflects a strong show of solidarity with Palestine. He has appointed a special envoy to assess the needs of Palestinians and has pledged to set up a fundraiser in collaboration with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Furthermore, the president will lead a nationwide rally under the slogan "Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin," which means "Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine."

The decision to ban Israeli travelers comes as tensions escalate in the region, compelling the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advise its citizens against traveling to the Maldives. This move underscores the Maldives' firm diplomatic stance amid turmoil, as stated in a press release from the presidential office.
President Muizzu’s recent post on X may have also influenced this decisive action. In his message, he emphasized the need to "assist our brothers and sisters in Palestine," reflecting his commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts.
