Major Recall Issued for Above-Ground Pools Due to Drowning Hazards

Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup just scored a big win. They’re demanding the recall of 5 million above-ground pools that have been sold across the United States. This important decision comes in response to the tragic deaths of nine kids. These 87 incidents occurred between 2007 and 2022 in 26 states, including California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Texas, and Wisconsin. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has confirmed the recall due to the potential drowning risks associated with these pools.

These pools, recently recalled for safety hazards, were manufactured in China. You might have been able to score them at mass merchants such as Big Lots, Costco, Kmart, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, Target, and Wal-Mart. Others allow municipalities to charge variable rates, meaning the price of these pools can vary widely. They range from a bit under $400 to more than $1,000, depending on their capacity, configuration and additional accessories you select.

Investigators found an egregious safety violation. Another concern with compression straps on inflatable pools is that it could easily create a platform that allows children access to the water. This creates a substantial drowning risk, even if the ladder is taken out of the pool.

In our collaboration to tackle this urgent challenge, the manufacturers added, “We all have a common interest in ensuring that our customers are safe. They further underscored their commitment to being at the forefront of safety improvements by issuing a voluntary recall with the CPSC and Health Canada.

Other safety measures for above-ground pools 48 inches or taller, that are sold and installed today, have since remedied this issue. To protect the safety of all above-ground pools sold since 2002 that can attain this height, we are announcing a voluntary recall together.

Because of this widespread recall, parents and caregivers everywhere are scared about the safety of above-ground pools. With more than 38 million vehicles recalled since 1996, experts recommend consumers act quickly to see if you own one of the affected models. Their guidance suggests either taking the pools back to where you bought them or reaching out to the manufacturers directly for additional help.
