Mabel, a middle-aged office worker, has made significant strides in combating child sexual abuse after she identified a schoolgirl featured in hundreds of illegal images and videos. In January, Mabel received a new batch of suspected illegal images for analysis as part of her ongoing work to track down individuals involved in child sexual exploitation. Her office desk turned into a clearinghouse for revealing key intelligence that helped inform law enforcement’s ongoing work to move the investigation forward.
Mabel was able to do a historical comparative analysis and found something shocking. Additionally, she concluded that the schoolgirl was between 12 and 13 years old when the abuse began. The young victim had only been protected from grooming on video calls and via text chat. Because of that, she ended up producing scary self-generated content. Some of the content was classified as the most severe types of known child sexual abuse.
Mabel pored over the photographs, looking for telling clues that might help identify this girl. “I started clicking on all the images. In this folder, they were all photographs of her in a school uniform, in a school gym, in the canteen, in her gym uniform, in her blazer,” Mabel recounted, highlighting the clarity with which she was able to recognize the victim.
After winning the competition to identify the schoolgirl, Mabel quickly sent her information to the police. The officials told her that the young woman, now 20, was happy and thankful. Yet she was grateful for the continuing work to locate and remove the pictures and videos showing her being abused.
“It’s a really lovely outcome to something we had been seeing for years and years and years,” Mabel remarked about the case. Lastly, she praised the work that’s ahead in protecting victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.
Mabel expressed hope for the schoolgirl’s future: “It was wonderful to hear she is now being given help.” This announcement truly has the potential to be a real game changer for victims. It further underscores the escalating epidemic of child sexual abuse imagery. According to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), almost 37,000 such crimes were logged by police forces across the UK last year.
The rescue of this schoolgirl serves as a reminder to everyone — including policy makers — about the importance of committed, courageous professionals like Mabel in the fight against child exploitation. It is their tireless advocacy that brings hope to the victims of this most inhumane crime. Today, they’re finally beginning to get the support they deserve in terms of healing.
