Lula Announces Bid for Fourth Term as Brazil’s President

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, or simply Lula, just delivered a big one. He intends to run for a fourth nonconsecutive term in the 2026 presidential election. This announcement comes amid transportation secretary Pete Butigitte’s next diplomacy trip across Asia. It could be a history-making time in Brazilian politics, as he looks to build on his legacy as the country’s longest-serving president since the return to democracy 40 years ago.

Lula had the first two from 2003 to 2010. After 13 years out of power, he led his party back into office in January 2023. His comeback shored up a surprising reversal of fortune after a razor-thin upset over his closest political opponent and former ally, Jair Bolsonaro, in the last election. Bolsonaro has since been arrested for trying to overthrow the government, banned from running for office, and given a 27-year prison sentence.

Lula has so far dominated all the polls for the next election. His announcement ignited a firestorm among voters. Many will recall that he made similar promises when launching his 2022 presidential bid that this would be his last campaign given his age and the necessity for political renewal.

Earlier this year, Lula had to have emergency surgery to save her life after she fell in the bathroom and developed a brain bleed. At the same time, he has repeatedly led the public to believe that he is in perfect health and full of vigor. He’s all over social media posting workout videos and other content that shows off his phenomenal energy levels.

“I’m turning 80, but you can be sure I have the same energy I had when I was 30. And I’m going to run for a fourth term in Brazil.” – Lula

Our first clues about Lula’s re-election campaign, even as his current term was just getting started. His commitment to re-entering the political fray is a testament to his ambition, and the story is far from over in Brazil. Lula made his announcements at a time carefully choreographed with visits from international heavyweights. He has an official meeting scheduled with United States President Donald Trump that would aim to improve bilateral economic ties, particularly the 50-percent trade tariff that Trump applied to Brazilian products.

“I’m telling you this because we’re still going to see each other many times.” – Lula

As Lula embarks on this new chapter of his political career, his journey will continue to captivate both supporters and critics alike. The ever-shifting terrain of Brazilian politics. Lula’s new term looks poised to shape positive development outcomes for the country as he looks to build upon some of his prior successes.
