Lonely Island Reflects on “My Testicles” and Tom Hanks’ Legacy

Comedic trio the Lonely Island recently rebooted their famous 2006 “digital short” My Testicles. This is the conversation they had about it on a recent, hilarious podcast episode with Seth Meyers. This specific short stars Tom Hanks and Andy Samberg as a Europop duo similar to Right Said Fred. In humorous fashion, the song addresses the impulse to want to keep one’s gonads safe from harm. It’s a whimsical premise that has stuck with fans since its original airing.

Originally called “Sex Song, I’m Too Sexy,” the song underwent a shocking makeover ahead of its release. Though its theme was certainly provocative, the melody couldn’t quite land the emotional punch it needed to resonate. “My Testicles” became an audience favorite and topped all of the music charts around the world. It went on to top the charts in America, Australia and most of Europe.

While appearing on the podcast, Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island compadre Jorma Taccone admitted that he was initially bummed out about their partnership with Hanks. He stated, “Sometimes I feel like we let people down.” Taccone shared his story of awe for Hanks, remembering the Eighties’ heartthrob’s performance in “Forrest Gump.” The trio shares a profound appreciation for Hanks. They have their own concerns about living up to the legends’ expectations, legends whom they’ve previously introduced, such as Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Springs of joy and fun were the order of the podcast as well. Samberg humorously commented on Taccone’s admiration for Hanks, saying, “Oh, I see, he was just watching him on the silver screen.” He teased Taccone, asking, “Hey, Jorm, did you break your foot dropping that name so hard?”

While recounting their collaborative experience making “My Testicles,” the Lonely Island boys brought to the forefront other iconic and bombastic digital shorts from “Saturday Night Live.” Great call on Neil Patrick Harris’ classic “Doogie Howser Theme,” guys. The trio still relish their comedic legacy, but look back on the burden of expectation for creating something truly iconic.

The journey of the Lonely Island serves as a reminder of the complexities artists face in balancing creativity with public expectations. They have proven themselves as innovative creators in comedy while navigating the sometimes daunting task of collaborating with Hollywood icons.
