The basketball community is mourning the loss of one of its great luminaries with the death of Lenny Wilkens at age 88. The mournful news has been confirmed by his family. So far, they have not disclosed how Williams died. There’s no doubt that Wilkens has created a remarkable legacy as one of the game’s most successful players and coaches. He was part of an amazing coaching career with nine as a player and five as a coach. He became the first NBA coach to win 1,000 games.

Wilkens’ impact on basketball went far beyond his individual honors. He is the all-time leader in coaching 2,487 NBA games, a badge of honor representing his longevity at the profession’s highest level. His mark on the game is permanent, as he became one of the only players to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. His extraordinary accomplishments as a player, coach and member of the legendary 1992 U.S. Olympic team distinguished him.

A Stellar Playing Career

Wilkens went on to have a Hall of Fame 15-season playing career. He displayed those gifts on the court with the St. Louis Hawks, the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trail Blazers. He’s often regarded as one of the greatest point guards of his generation. His brilliance on the court helped to engrave his name on nine All-Star ballots.

His induction in 1997 into the Basketball Hall of Fame marked the zenith of his playing career. After retiring as a player, Wilkens smoothly transitioned into coaching, which is where he made an indelible mark. For his achievements, in 2019 he became the NBA’s first coach to reach 1,000 wins. This moment highlighted his incredible strategic brilliance and deep-seated leadership talent. During his storied coaching career, Wilkens compiled 1,332 wins, a league record at the time.

Wilkens was named NBA Coach of the Year in 1994 during his tenure with the Atlanta Hawks. He coached in Seattle for a remarkable 11 seasons. During his time, he garnered success not only in the regular season but in playoff runs as well, leading all of his teams to a championship.
