Lancashire is set to transform the educational landscape for its secondary school pupils with the introduction of the MEGA Hubs scheme. This innovative initiative, a collaboration between Lancashire County Council and technology firm IN4 Group, aims to enhance digital skills and create promising career opportunities for young people across the region.
The MEGA Hubs scheme will be available to all secondary schools in Lancashire until the end of the 2026 academic year. It seeks to address the growing demand from employers for expertise in digital, cyber, and tech skills. By providing pupils with hands-on experience in coding, cyber security, and machine learning, the initiative aspires to cultivate a skilled and inclusive workforce ready to meet the needs of the modern job market.
As part of the program, extra-curricular days will be offered, allowing students to delve deeper into digital technologies. Additionally, an out-of-school Cyber and Esports Academy will be established, further enriching students' learning experiences. Digital skills will be integrated into traditional subjects through a revamped Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) curriculum.
The scheme has garnered substantial support, receiving £550,000 from the Lancashire Economic Growth & Development Investment Fund (LEGDIF). This funding underscores the importance of the initiative in fostering an environment conducive to technological advancement in education.
Council leader Phillippa Williamson expressed her enthusiasm for the project. She stated, “We are confident we can inspire the next generation of digital professionals and ensure Lancashire remains at the forefront of technological innovation.” Her vision encompasses not just skill enhancement, but also a commitment to inclusivity within the workforce.
Mo Isap, chief executive of IN4 Group, echoed this sentiment. He noted that the program aims to empower young people to reach their potential, emphasizing that it is designed to be accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic background. "We're passionate about empowering young people to achieve their potential, regardless of their socioeconomic or disadvantaged background," Isap said.
The MEGA Hubs scheme will also provide students with opportunities to experience cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. By integrating these elements into their education, pupils will gain valuable insights into emerging fields that are shaping the future.
