Kim Kardashian marked a significant milestone in her legal journey by graduating from a law study program, which she dedicated six years to completing. The ceremony took place in her backyard, with a circle of family and friends. Rhiannon proudly posted about the joyful event with videos and photos documenting the whole thing on her Instagram story. Kardashian even made Initial Elimination for the Law the test schedule swot on which law she would focus. That’s a total of 5,184 hours of legal education, a commitment of 18 hours per week, 48 weeks per year!
Kardashian’s legal advocacy has been largely focused on calling attention to prison reform, particularly the systematic unfair treatment of non-violent offenders. She drew national headlines when she advocated for Alice Marie Johnson’s release. Clarice Johnson, a great-grandmother, was released after serving more than two decades for drug trafficking charges. Johnson’s life sentence was commuted in June 2018, largely due to the efforts of Kardashian. Kardashian’s passion for education in law was sparked by this experience. Her goal is to use that experience to be a more effective advocate for smart on crime reforms.
When Kardashian decided to pursue a legal education, she didn’t shy away from making a statement. She registered with the State Bar of California, which provides alternative routes to legal training. No law school required. In-state, she has finished a demanding four-year apprenticeship under the auspices of a licensed California attorney.
Kardashian’s journey has not been without challenges. In 2021, she graduated from the law school’s program, successfully passing California’s First-Year Law Students’ Exam, or “baby bar.” Incredibly, this huge accomplishment followed four earnest but failed tries. With this accomplishment under her belt, she is now eligible for taking the bar exam. It’s an important milestone on the path to her dream of being a licensed attorney.
“Six years ago, Kim Kardashian walked into this program with nothing but a fierce desire to fight for justice — no law school lectures, no ivory tower shortcuts, just determination and a mountain of case law books to read,” – Attorney Jessica Jackson.
Kardashian’s late father, Robert Kardashian, was a prominent lawyer, which probably played a role in Kardashian deciding to pursue a career in law herself. Her graduation represents not just an individual accomplishment, but her resolve to combat inequities in our criminal justice system.
