Khamzat Chimaev Claims UFC Middleweight Title with Dominant Performance

Khamzat Chimaev has dubbed himself the new undisputed UFC middleweight champion. He earned this shocking upset by completely dismantling Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319. The 31-year-old combatant, who claims citizenship in both Russia and the United Arab Emirates, showcased his superior grappling offense throughout the blistering 25-minute contest. He landed an incredible 12 of 17 takedown attempts. Notably, Chimaev was on top for 84% of the fight, highlighting his all-around control and clear domination of the bout.

From the first bell, Chimaev was all over him. He methodically shut down Du Plessis in the opening minute of every round, making his blueprint all the more apparent. The contest rapidly became a showcase of his unmatched wrestling and ground control abilities. All three judges had Chimaev 50-44, a lopsided score reflecting the dominant performance.

Chimaev’s performance was characterized by his methodical approach and unwavering focus. From the start he saw little threat from Du Plessis, who could not get out of the grappling exchanges. In a deciding sequence in the last round, Chimaev escaped a guillotine choke to secure a victory. He quickly wrested control away and established himself as the clear lead dog and best striker in the fight.

Since entering the UFC in 2020, Chimaev has rapidly risen through the ranks and made a sizable impact on the welterweight division. He’s already beaten two big former champions in Kamaru Usman and Robert Whittaker. This record now presents him as an imposing opponent.

Post-fight comments demonstrated his respect for Du Plessis and recognition of the challenge he presented during the fight.

“The man has incredible control on top. It wasn’t a matter of strength; it wasn’t physical; it was almost like he knew what your next move was. I could almost taste that victory [with the guillotine choke hold], but he beat me fair and square. He was the better man tonight. I’ll be coming to get my belt back, but for now, it’s his. He deserves it.” – Dricus Du Plessis

Chimaev opened up about how he felt about the fight and on his journey in the sport so far.

“I am happy, always. I never have a game plan, just go in and work like I do in the gym. That guy [Du Plessis] is strong. I couldn’t finish. I respect that guy. He is the only champion that would say my name. This guy has big heart.” – Khamzat Chimaev
