Maher Fattouh, a young man who lost his sight due to a bomb explosion while escaping military service in Syria, has defied the odds to graduate and start a new chapter in his life. At just 21, Fattouh faced the devastating news that he would never see again after the tragic incident at the border crossing into Lebanon in 2014. His journey from despair to achievement is a testament to his determination and resilience.
In 2018, Fattouh achieved his high school diploma, marking the beginning of his educational pursuit in the United Kingdom. He later attended the University of Cambridge, where he earned an English teaching qualification in 2022. Fattouh then chose the University of Bristol for further studies, drawn by its cobblestone streets that reminded him of Damascus and its rich tapestry of churches and monuments.
Fattouh shared his inspiring story with an audience of 1,000 people during his graduation ceremony. He expressed deep gratitude for the support he received from the University of Bristol, specifically highlighting the disability services he "loved." The university's assistance played a crucial role in helping him manage his academic journey and achieve independence.
"I'd like to show that a person with massive, massive challenges can live safely and independently and achieve academic excellence," said Maher Fattouh.
Fattouh's story is not just about overcoming blindness but also about breaking barriers associated with his Syrian identity. One of his dreams was to open a bank account, an impossibility as a Syrian citizen. His success is a beacon of hope for others facing similar trials.
In London, Fattouh secured a position as an academic support officer, marking another milestone in his journey. Despite not having returned to Syria in over a decade, he hopes for a change in government that will allow him to visit family soon.
"In my community, the definition of visual impairment is a 'fall into darkness'," Fattouh remarked, reflecting on societal perceptions of blindness.
Despite the challenges, Fattouh's journey is marked by perseverance and courage. His ability to own his story and rise above adversity exemplifies his strength.
"I'm really proud of owning my story. I lived so many dark periods for so long," he shared.
