Jessica Hecht Reflects on Her ‘Friends’ Audition and Role as Susan Bunch

Jessica Hecht, known for her memorable role as Susan Bunch on the hit NBC sitcom “Friends,” recently opened up about her audition for the iconic character of Monica Geller. Although she ultimately did not land the role, Hecht’s reflections provide insight into both her journey and the casting process of one of television’s most beloved shows.

Hecht played Susan Bunch, the love interest of Ross’ ex-wife Carol, in 13 episodes over the life of the show. Her character quickly became an important source of moral comfort and support for Ross, enchanting viewers and fans alike. Hecht was first intended for the part of Monica Geller. This character would go on to be closely associated with Courteney Cox.

The actress revealed that her own agent dissuaded her from auditioning for “Friends.” At the time, the casting team was still searching for their final contenders. She didn’t even try to conceal her enthusiasm for having landed the opportunity. I went in, mostly excited to meet Ellie Kanner, and then they started auditioning me for Monica,” she shared. Kanner, the show’s casting director, has had a decades-long relationship with Hecht. They have been pals since their adolescence in their small Connecticut town.

As much as she loved the audition process and was fueled by her enthusiasm, Hecht feels that her physicality is exactly why she didn’t get cast as Monica. She added, “At that time, I started realizing oh snap, I’m bigger than everybody—I am way bigger than everybody. Looking back on that time, I understand how absolutely right Courteney was for the part. I can definitely picture myself as a Lisa Kudrow, in terms of physicality and energy.

Though Hecht did not win the part of Monica Geller, she is grateful for how “Friends” has touched so many people. “That show affecting so many people’s lives,” she noted, recognizing its cultural significance. She wasn’t annoyed that her character didn’t get to have one of the main roles – she was glad. Yet she understood the strains that accompany such portfolio burdens. The burden of that is heavier than anyone else can bear,” Hecht said.

Jessica Hecht is well-known for her acclaimed role on Friends. She’s received accolades in theater as well, receiving three Tony Award nominations during her career. Most recently, though, she was nominated for her performance in the vaccination drama “Eureka Day.”

Hecht has been married to director Adam Bernstein since 1993. Bernstein has garnered an impressive body of work in film, television and music videos. In particular, he helmed the classic smash hit “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot.
