In a newly-released statement, Jared Leto has categorically rejected the sexual misconduct allegations recently reported by nine women. This push back followed the release of an Oped by Air Mail on Friday. The allegations in themselves, while horrible, are not the worst part. Some of these women claim that they were minors at the time of the events.
In a statement to Air Mail, a representative for Leto asserted, “All of the allegations are expressly denied.” Not surprisingly, the seriousness of the claims has attracted media attention. That’s particularly unfortunate in light of the charges against the two 17-year-olds and one 16-year-old.
La Rue’s first encounter with Leto was at an animal rights benefit in Los Angeles. At the time, she was only 16 years old. La Rue claims that their email communications led her to fly out to visit him in April 2009. During that visit, she alleges prominently he “walked out of a room totally nude” while she was there and just 17 years old. She described Leto as “Hollywood’s most persistent predator in a kilt,” highlighting her concerns over his behavior.
Allie Teilz, yet another woman who has recently come forward, accused Leto of traumatizing and assaulting her at the age of 17. In her social media posts, Teilz said that Leto knew her age and did not care how inappropriate his actions were. She said it was predatory, terrifying, and completely unacceptable. Teilz’s serious accusations provide disturbing context, featuring intense quotes allegedly from Leto, including asking her about her sexual history and explicit sexual requests, among many others.
A fourth woman discussed her experience texting Leto after they met in a cafe when she was only 16. As soon as she spoke with them, she realized our conversations would begin to go sexual.
These allegations sparked serious conversations about rampant power abuse in the entertainment industry. They have ignited invaluable conversations about the toxicity of high-profile men’s treatment of women.
