James Middleton, the brother of the Princess of Wales, recently opened up about the challenges faced by their family following Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis. In a recent interview with The Times, the 38-year-old businessman and philanthropist spoke candidly about the emotional toll the situation has taken on his family. He highlighted just how needed support is in these difficult times.
When Kate Middleton publicly announced her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, it sent shockwaves through the country and the world, as millions tuned in to hear her words. For her, remission followed after completing her preventative chemotherapy. She told the world she was in remission by January. Through it all, James Middleton has been a steadfast source of comfort and protection for his sister.
It was a very difficult time for her and her family,” he said. What I know now, looking back, is that it was difficult for us and hard on our extended family as well. I think that goes back to communication and just being able to continuously communicate support, help, resources, everything that you can to people.
James’ message was to underscore the importance of having loved ones with you when you’re going through hard times. He acknowledged the unconditional nature of familial love, stating, “Being there for someone is such an important part… It should be on their terms. Unconditional: ‘I’m not doing it for something in return. I’m doing it because I love you.’”
The relationship between James, Kate and their sister Pippa Middleton has always been close. The trio of siblings and their dad go into family therapy each week. This support proved invaluable as they both dealt with their own demons, including James’s fight against depression. He framed their shared experiences as a way to deepen their understanding of each other and build resilience together as a family.
In his own words, “Through the decades, we have moved mountains together,” James reminisced. As a family, we’ll mount this challenge with you as well.
In September, James Middleton recorded this personal video message to WABA. He shared the story of Kate’s battle with cancer, which he characterized as “complicated, frightening and unpredictable.” His heartfelt observations reinforce the lengths he will go to – to facilitate his sister’s return to stability after this tumultuous time.
