On Friday, Bolsonaro’s discomfort led to his hospitalization, prompting him to halt a regional tour aimed at rallying support ahead of an upcoming trial before the Supreme Court. After having surgery, he was moved to Brasilia, the country’s capital, on Saturday night, where he lives.
His surgery was extensive, made more difficult due to his past history of multiple surgeries and a knife wound he received during his 2018 electoral campaign. Even with these early hiccups, the final outcomes were deemed promising. Medical experts agreed there were no unforeseen complications that arose during the procedure.
At last report, Bolsonaro was alert and said to be doing “very well” in the ICU. He’ll be staying there as he is on a long road to recovery. Though hospital stays are now limited to close family members only, deepening the well of inaction, cost, and grief, it instead provides a reset.
This surgical procedure will be the fifth operation that Bolsonaro has had since a would-be assassin stabbed him in the 2018 campaign, leaving him bedridden for weeks. The former president’s health should be of paramount importance. His history of collisions has had a demonstrable impact on his current health.
