Jaco van Gass, South African-born former soldier, received the OBE award of Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Prince William awarded him with the honor during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. This honor is in recognition of his exemplary advocacy and contributions to the field of cycling. Given that he suffered life-altering injuries on his second tour in Afghanistan, this is particularly poignant.
Van Gass’s resilience to get to the top is as inspiring as the world class performances that followed. In 2013, he undertook a 208-mile journey to the South Pole. He undertook this trek with Prince Harry to raise funds and awareness for the charitable organization Walking With The Wounded. This experience did not only demonstrate his impressive physical skills but shared how he dedicated his talents to serving others. Van Gass expressed that the Invictus Games provided competitors with “that lease of life to then continue being a better person,” emphasizing the transformative power of sports.
Most notably in 2014 when he garnered international attention at London’s inaugural Invictus Games. There, he found great success, winning two gold cycling medals. Even the royal family, who sent a video message of congratulations, recognized the significance of this extraordinary accomplishment. Prince Harry personally presented him with one of his own medals. Van Gass was on top of his sporting game too, winning two golds and one bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. He’s on track to return from the Paris 2024 Paralympics with two golds in his pocket!
Prince William has publicly praised van Gass, describing him as “one of life’s most inspirational people.” William’s penned the foreword to van Gass’s memoir, “Unequivocal.” This collaborative act of artistry is a testament to their deep bond and was released in 2022. From athlete to advocate, this book tells the story of van Gass’s extraordinary journey and is a source of inspiration to all.
As his successes continue to amaze, the tide is shifting in the sporting community. Sir Gareth Southgate, manager of the England national football team, acknowledged van Gass’s impact and support, noting, “He kindly thanked me for what I’d done.” This camaraderie is indicative of the positive spaces that sports can create between people of all walks of life.
Jaco van Gass’s story, of course, is the definition of resilience and dedication. From a soldier returned home with life-altering challenges, to an accomplished athlete and philanthropist, his story motivates and inspires millions. The recognition from Prince William with the OBE award further cements his status as a role model for those overcoming adversity.
