Israeli Forces Launch Ground Operations in Deir al-Balah as Evacuations Intensify

Israeli tanks also blasted their way into the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah on Monday. This was the first time ground operations had occurred in the area since the invasion started 21 months ago. The Israeli military followed suit with an evacuation order. It forced hundreds of thousands of residents to vacate an almost 6 square kilometer (2.3 square mile) zone in the city, thus spurring this incitement.

On Sunday, the Israeli military dropped flyers over parts of Deir al-Balah. These brochures instructed community members to leave in advance of anticipated government operations. Around the clock, bumper-to-bumper, intense artillery bombardment and airstrikes rattled the city day and night. Families scrambled to escape their homes as panic set in.

The evacuation order had catastrophic outcomes for families who fled to Deir al-Balah. Attef Abu Mousa lamented the repeated displacements he has endured: “This tent I have put up and down 13 times. Tonight was very difficult.” Like many families, his quickly came to terms with leaving their homes at gunpoint.

As military action escalated, humanitarian agencies sounded the alarm about the urgent threat the conflict posed to civilians. Mai Elawawda from Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) reported harrowing conditions: “Shelling is taking place all around our office, and military vehicles are just 400 meters away from our colleagues and their families.”

The United Nations warned that the ongoing conflict has dealt yet another devastating blow to the precarious conditions sustaining life in Gaza. With access to food and medicine completely cut off, Gazans now face an even more dire reality.
