Israel Steps Up Airstrikes to Protect Druze Amid Syrian Clashes

More recently, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have significantly increased the pace of airstrikes targeting Syria. They are fanatical about defending the Druze community, which has faced deadly protests against recruitment that have turned into clashes with Syrian regime troops and Bedouin tribes. Ties have increased to the point that violence just broke out between Druze rebels and other tribes in the predominantly Druze southern Syrian city of Suwayda. This continued escalation has led to intervention by the Syrian government.

The Druze, an Arab minority group—mostly located in towns and villages close to Israel’s border—are experiencing life-or-death clashes. This is a significant step up as civil unrest continues to ripple across Syria. The devastating humanitarian and environmental crisis prompted round-the-clock international concern, particularly from the United States. During the last month, they have called these recent developments “worrisome” and emphasized the need to protect the Druze community.

In the wake of that kidnappings, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz posed together in solidarity. They reiterated their desire to protect the Druze community within Syria itself. Katz posted video of some of those airstrikes and said, “the painful blows have started.” This statement further reflects a heavy military enforcement intended to defend the Druze community from perceived dangers.

Instead, the IDF just conducted unprecedented, targeted strikes on critical military installations in Syria. In particular, they struck the main entrance of the building that houses the Syrian ministry of defense. According to statements made by the Syrian health ministry, such measures contributed to at least one death. They took the lives of 18 others, causing serious injury to hundreds more. External impact Early strikes by Israel resulted in injury to two civilians, highlighting potential collateral damage amid military clash.

“To our Druze brothers in Israel – you can count on the Israel Defense Forces to protect your brothers in Syria. Prime Minister Netanyahu and I, as defense minister, have made a commitment – and we will honor it.” – Israel Katz

Violence is indeed spreading in Suwayda. In retaliation, the IDF has been working behind the scenes to safeguard the Druze community. This unfortunate incident underscores the challenging dynamics of regional discord and the continuing humanitarian disaster resulting from Syria’s decade-long war.
