The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member squad for Asia Cup 2025. The tournament is set to begin on September 9 in Dubai. The most remarkable absentees from the squad are explosive opening batsman, Yashasvi Jaiswal and experienced campaigner, Shreyas Iyer. Suryakumar Yadav, who replace Rohit Sharma as T20 captain in the last series, will continue to lead.
Widely regarded as having the hottest bat in the world right now, Jaiswal’s omission was unexpected to say the least. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said he was sorry for the decision. As for McKennie, Klinsmann said the young player will just have to bide his time until his opportunity comes to light on the international scene.
Squad Composition
It can’t be overlooked that this year’s squad features some extraordinary talent. The trio of Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson looks primed to challenge for the openings. With challenging fixtures up next, India will need to reassess the left-hander’s position in their batting order.
Agarkar pointed out the lack of obvious depth in the squad, saying the selectors had tough calls to make.
“One of these guys was going to miss out, Yashasvi just has to wait for his chance.” – Ajit Agarkar
The addition of both Gill and Sharma give them more options from a batting perspective. Agarkar noted,
“There’s Abhishek Sharma – what he’s done over the last year or so, plus he can bowl a little bit. He gives us that option if required.” – Ajit Agarkar
Upcoming Matches
India, drawn in Group A, will open their campaign against the hosts from the region, the United Arab Emirates on M9/9. Just four days later, they’ll take on their arch-rivals Pakistan in the same venue. The matches should all be exciting contests with the potential to really determine how deep into the tournament this young U-17 team can go.
With a good blend of old heads and young guns in the squad, confidence is high as they seek to re-establish themselves as Asia’s powerhouse. The addition of Jasprit Bumrah further complicates things for oppositions as it gives India a freakish looking strike force.
Looking Ahead
While Jaiswal’s absence may disappoint fans, the selectors believe they have chosen a competitive team capable of achieving success in the Asia Cup. The excitement builds as India prepares for its opening match, and all eyes will be on how the selected players perform under pressure.
