Igloo has announced a significant recall of approximately 1.06 million coolers sold across major retailers in the United States due to a handle hazard that poses a severe risk of fingertip amputation and other injuries. The recall also affects an additional 47,000 coolers sold in Canada and 23,000 in Mexico. Sold between 2019 and January 2025, these coolers, priced between $80 and $140, were available at popular retailers such as Costco, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Amazon.
The coolers, manufactured in the United States before January 2024, are designed in multiple colors with the distinctive "IGLOO" branding on the side. The recall was prompted by reports of injuries caused by the cooler's handle, which can pinch users' fingertips, leading to potentially serious injuries. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall notice after Igloo received 12 injury reports in the US, involving fingertip amputations, bone fractures, and lacerations. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in Canada or Mexico.
Consumers are strongly advised to cease using the coolers immediately to prevent any risk of injury. Igloo is offering a free replacement handle for affected customers. Those who own the recalled coolers can register for the recall online or contact Igloo directly at 888-943-5182 or via email at igloo90qt@sedgwick.com to request a replacement handle.
"With consumer safety as our top priority," said Igloo in a statement.
"Through rigorous testing and proactive steps, we are constantly improving our products to meet the highest safety standards," added Igloo.
The recall highlights Igloo's commitment to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its consumers, reinforcing its ongoing efforts to maintain quality and reliability in its product offerings.
