Iconic SS United States Set for Final Voyage to Become World’s Largest Artificial Reef

The SS United States, an iconic ocean liner that has captured American hearts for over 70 years, is about to embark on its final journey. On Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 4 a.m., the historic vessel will leave Philadelphia, marking the beginning of a two-week voyage down the East Coast, around the southern tip of Florida. The ship's ultimate destination lies off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida Panhandle, where it will be sunk to form the world’s largest artificial reef. Okaloosa County, the ship's new owner, announced this ambitious plan as part of a new chapter for the SS United States.

The SS United States was withdrawn from service in 1969 but is best known for setting the transatlantic speed record in 1952. Nearly as large as the Chrysler Building and stretching almost 1,000 feet long, the ship is an engineering marvel. Once it reaches Mobile, Alabama, it will undergo final preparations for its transformation into a haven for fish and divers. The process involves removing hazardous material, including non-metal parts and fuel, to ensure the deployment is environmentally friendly.

Before heading to its final resting place, the SS United States will be moved from Pier 82 to Pier 80 in Philadelphia. This marks the first leg of its voyage. The SS United States Conservancy, the ship's previous owner, has confirmed the move following "comprehensive due diligence" and "extensive testing." These measures aim to guarantee the safety and environmental integrity of this monumental project.

While the journey itself will take two weeks, an extensive 12-month preparation period is planned to ensure all safety protocols are met. The Okaloosa County has made "positive progress" regarding approvals with the Coast Guard's "Captain of the Port Order," a critical step in guaranteeing that this endeavor proceeds smoothly. However, they caution that "dates, times and other logistics are subject to change."

Once submerged, the SS United States will serve as a unique underwater attraction, drawing tourists and marine life alike to its new home beneath the waves. This venture not only preserves a significant piece of maritime history but also contributes to marine conservation efforts.
