Simancas was kayaking above a swarm of fish when the unexpected encounter unfolded. A humpback whale, in its natural feeding routine, took a mouthful of over 5,000 gallons (23,000 liters) of seawater to filter out its prey across baleen plates. These whales primarily feed on small fish and crustaceans. The incident was brief yet intense, as Simancas and the whale disappeared beneath the waves for a few seconds before he resurfaced unharmed.
Shortly before this remarkable event, Simancas was discussing killer whales with his father, adding an ironic twist to his experience. Initially mistaking the humpback whale for a killer whale, Simancas told The Associated Press (AP) that he feared for his life in those fleeting seconds.

Notably, Hoyt clarified that humpback whales are known for their altruistic behavior, occasionally protecting other animals from predators like killer whales.
