Hudson’s Bay Reinstates Commission Payments for Employees

Hudson’s Bay just as it is being liquidated right now. The company has backed off from that decision and will now resume commission payments for its employees, according to Unifor. On May 6, 2025, Hudson’s Bay just changed the game. This comes on the heels of their March announcement that they would cease all commission payments effective on or around April 20. Unifor, which represents approximately 595 employees at Hudson’s Bay stores in Ontario and workers at the company’s fulfilment centres, confirmed that staff will once again receive commission.

Dwayne Gunness, President of Unifor Local 40, said he was pleased the company agreed to reinstate commission payments. He stated that the reversal demonstrates a commitment to fair compensation for employees who play a crucial role in the company’s operations. Along with positive impact on morale and motivation of employees, reinstate commissions. This amendment will enable them to better face the difficulties of being an employee of a liquidating company.

On April 20, Hudson’s Bay Company made the surprise announcement that it would cease all commission payments. This abrupt decision generated an outcry from employees and union officials alike. The original announcement set off a staff revolt that got Unifor lobbying Ottawa to restore these financial carrots. The union’s efforts appear to have been successful, as Hudson’s Bay later informed its employees that commissions would resume.
