Hollywood Mourns the Loss of Beloved Actor and Stuntman Jack Lilley

In his death, Hollywood has lost one of its most respected and well-liked stars. Actor and stuntman Jack Lilley died peacefully on March 19, 2022. Lilley became a recurring character on hit television shows, perfecting the role of puckish carriage and wagon whips. You may know him from such all-time greats as “Little House on the Prairie,” “Gunsmoke,” “City Slickers” and “Blazing Saddles.” His family announced his unexpected passing earlier this week, posting emotional tributes on social media.

Lilley’s legacy stretches well beyond his television appearances. He was one of those versatile talents, famous for his work as a cattle wrangler and boss as well. His deep love and respect for animals, along with his impressive gift to communicate with them and people alike, made him one of Hollywood’s most treasured gems. Savannah Dawn Lilley, a family member, fondly remembered him:

"He cared deeply for all of the people he worked with and cared even more for the animals he worked with. He took great pride in keeping them safe and well cared for."

Born into a community tightly woven around friendship, shared values and deep traditions, Jack Lilley married his lifelong partner Irene on Dec. 20, 1958. Together, the couple forged a rich life overflowing with love and laughter. Their three children, Clay, Clint, and Ben have all expressed their sincere thanks for all the support they provided when the three of them were in such deep water. The family shared with "Good Morning America" that Lilley had a profound impact on those around him, stating:

"He was truly one of a kind."

Lilley leaves a profound legacy of love and laughter. He is survived by his wonderful sons, Jim, Doug, & Steve and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His family remembered him as a kind man, truly funny with an incredibly generous spirit. Savannah Dawn Lilley shared:

"He just had a way with people to make you feel at home."

Jack Lilley’s impact on Hollywood was profound from his incredible performances. It was his devotion to the form – both the actor’s craft and the stunt performer’s art – that made him one of a kind. Even in his later years, he remained connected to his passion for Westerns, as remembered by Savannah:

"Even in his 90s, he would have the Western channel on and be able to call out horse's names from all the old movies and TV shows. He thought of THEM as the real stars."

Melissa Gilbert, a fellow cast member from "Little House on the Prairie," expressed her sorrow:

"The little house family has lost one of our own."

Visitation for Jack Lilley will be made known through the Irene Ryan Acting Troupe. His family still works to keep the spirit of his name alive and is thankful for all the love and support shown by both fans and friends.
