Hinchley Wood School Reverses Controversial Admissions Policy Proposal

Hinchley Wood School in Esher has reversed its decision to prioritize students from primary schools within its trust, a proposal that was set to take effect in September 2026. The Hinchley Wood Learning Partnership, which oversees the school's admissions policy, had faced significant opposition from parents and the local community over the proposed changes. Parents, led by Annette Whymark, launched a campaign against the plans, fearing they would leave children in Long Ditton without access to a local secondary school.

The proposal intended to prioritize admissions from the four local feeder primary schools, two of which are managed by the academy trust. This change sparked concern as it could potentially deprioritize students from St Mary's in Long Ditton and Claygate in Esher. The head teacher of Claygate Primary School, Sandra Cunningham, voiced her apprehensions about the shift in feeder status.

"We were concerned about the change of feeder status and are pleased they have changed their mind." – Sandra Cunningham, head teacher of Claygate Primary School

The initial proposal was scrapped following a public consultation. Parents expressed relief at the decision, with Annette Whymark describing it as "such a relief" and expressing elation at the outcome.

"This would have left children in Long Ditton without a local secondary school. It was incredibly unfair." – Annette Whymark

The Hinchley Wood Learning Partnership responded to the situation by reassuring stakeholders of their commitment to providing quality education and support for all pupils.

"We want to reassure all stakeholders that our priority remains unchanged — providing the very best education and support for every pupil in our care." – Hinchley Wood Learning Partnership

The trust also emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with neighboring schools to enhance opportunities for all children in the area.

"The relationships with our neighbouring schools is incredibly important to us and we are committed to working closely with them to strengthen partnerships and enhance opportunities for all children in the local area." – A spokesperson for the school trust
