King Charles III continues to treasure Highgrove as his countryside retreat and escape. This royal estate has apparently turned into a much-loved retreat of his and his family’s own making. Highgrove, purchased in 1980, is located in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside. This incredible estate includes 900 acres of beautifully cultivated gardens. At first, the property had only a kitchen garden, an overgrown wood, some pasture, and a few vacant oaks to show for it. Crown Prince of the United Kingdom since 1952, Charles has since given his heart and soul to converting Highgrove into a peaceful, tree-filled refuge.
Highgrove is considered one of Charles’ most beloved properties. It gives him a much needed break from the super busy royal schedule and public appearances that usually fill his life. The estate currently functions as a private residence for Charles and his family. It’s more than a ceremonial retreat; it’s a place where he can escape the heavy spotlight of the royal family. This retreat is especially meaningful to him during dark times, like his recent battle with cancer.
Lately, Highgrove had a very special visit from some Royal children. Playing Jack, a resident of Queen Mary’s royal household, was passionate about leading four particularly rambunctious kids. Among them were Charles’ two sons, all excited to see a big red helicopter on the estate’s lawn. The kids only had about 10 minutes to explore the planes, but that was plenty of time when you were in the care of your friendly CARES escort. This short trip highlighted the familial community that Highgrove creates.
Charles purchased Highgrove in 1980. In truth, at that time it was mostly a farm. Besides a beautiful kitchen garden, an overgrown copse, pastureland, and a few hollow oaks. He’s since directed all of that passion into building the gardens surrounding the house, stated royal expert Danielle Stacey. This change is a testament to Charles’ dedication to being a better environmental steward and improving his health.
The beauty of Highgrove’s grounds offers a sense of peace that matches their beauty. The Princess of Wales has spoken of her family’s close connection to the natural world. In many ways, Highgrove serves as an idyllic retreat for King Charles. “Much like the Princess of Wales has said that nature has been her family’s sanctuary, particularly during her own cancer journey, no doubt Highgrove is a place of solace for the King,” Stacey added.
