Germany has announced a suspension of military equipment shipments to Israel that could potentially be used in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This move comes on the heels of the dramatic and horrific upsurge of violence that has resulted in unfathomable humanitarian catastrophe in the territory.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz made the announcement, stating that Germany could no longer overlook the increasing toll on civilians in Gaza. He underscored that Israel should allow unlimited access for humanitarian organizations. This access is crucial for meeting the urgent needs of those affected by the ongoing conflict. From October 2022 to this May, the German government granted arms export licenses to Israel on their own. These licenses were worth 485 million euros (~ $564 million)
“Considering the human rights situation, the German government will stop all exports of military equipment that might find their way to the Gaza Strip,” he continued. This unnecessary restriction will be in effect until rescinded, …” Merz said. He said the forthcoming Israeli offensive increases the obligation of the Israeli government. The time has come for them to put the well-being of the people – the civilian population – first.
And the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is deepening. According to civil authorities, 197 people including 96 children have died from malnutrition caused by the war. Israel’s perpetual onslaught has resulted in tens of thousands killed and set off a starvation emergency, raising international alarm.
At the end of last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the security cabinet had approved a plan. This proposal would be a bid to assume dominance over Gaza City. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that Israeli forces sought military control of the whole Gaza Strip. Alongside these military operations, Israel has restricted humanitarian aid supplies with extreme measures, only compounding relief efforts.
Merz noted that with the planned offensive, the Israeli government has even more responsibility for civilian harm. As the crisis enters a deadly new phase, he highlighted the immediate requirements for humanitarian relief.
The timing of a potential third major Israeli ground operation in Gaza is unknown as each side continues to contend with the rapidly unfolding violence. The Israeli parliament recently approved a symbolic measure advocating for the annexation of the West Bank, further intensifying regional tensions.
As the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza worsens, pressure mounts on world leaders to address the unfolding crisis and ensure that civilians receive necessary aid.
“Will prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones.” – Netanyahu’s office
