Maria's journey from Canada to Spain, with a significant chapter in the United States, is a profound tale of transformation, resilience, and new beginnings. Having moved from Canada to the US in 1998, Maria's life took a pivotal turn when she met her husband Alex during her time at Princeton University. However, the unexpected loss of Alex in 2018 set Maria on a path that would ultimately lead her and her son Lucas to the picturesque city of Valencia, Spain, in 2021.
Maria's discomfort with the prevalence of guns in the US was one of the factors that influenced her decision to leave. As she navigated her life as a professor in the US, this concern was ever-present. Her unease was compounded by the tragic loss of her husband, which became a catalyst for her decision to move.
“Because of losing my husband, I was kind of pushed…” – Maria
The decision to relocate was not made lightly. Maria had already started the process of applying for Spanish citizenship while living in Chicago. Her fluency in Spanish played a crucial role in easing the transition to a new life abroad. It was during a visit to Spain that Lucas suggested the move, seeing an opportunity for a fresh start in a vibrant culture.
“He embraced living here and I think that helps tremendously,” – Maria
Leaving behind friends and a familiar environment was difficult for Maria when she decided to move to Spain. Yet, she found solace and connection in Valencia, a place that felt more like home than anywhere else. Her favorite photograph, taken on a beach in Valencia when she was just five years old, symbolizes her deep-rooted attachment to this coastal city.
“It was like arriving to the promised land…” – Maria
In Valencia, Maria found purpose and passion through her ventures. She established By the Sea Retreats, offering wellness retreats in Valencia and Sagunto. Additionally, she set up a relocation company, Valencia Vibes Relocation, with a dedicated team to assist others looking to make similar moves.
“We intend to make the moving process and all that it entails seamless and easy for those looking to relocate here in Valencia,” – Maria
For Maria, relocating to Spain was not merely about escaping past traumas but about embracing new possibilities. She believes that moving to another country allows individuals to explore different facets of themselves, opening up new opportunities and perspectives.
“You can try on another life. And that’s exciting. Because your possibilities open up.” – Maria
Maria's story is one of finding home in a foreign land, driven by personal tragedy and the pursuit of healing. Her journey underscores the transformative power of change and the resilience required to seek new beginnings.
