That’s right, the critically acclaimed, award-winning fifth season of “Emily in Paris” has finally dropped! This season continues the thrilling, globetrotting adventures of Emily Cooper as she moves to Rome after all that happened last season. Starring Lily Collins as Emily, Ashley Park as her best friend Mindy. Against the backdrop of one of Italy’s most stunning cities, this season explores the changing currents of their friendship.
This season, Emily is dazzling at Agence Grateau. She lands a prestigious Italian espresso client and collaborates with a well known, family owned luxury fashion house known for its understated elegance. Emily has to contend with enormous obstacles in her work life. These fights are compounded for her when she finds out that Mindy is having a secret relationship with Alfie, her ex-boyfriend from season three. It’s these complications that create the film’s most interesting tension within their once-invulnerable bond, a layer that feels true to life’s messy friendships.
Collins spoke about Emily’s evolution over the course of the series. “I think that was a real turning point for her and her confidence,” she noted, emphasizing how these experiences shape Emily’s character. She added, “Things will happen and you may not expect them to go the way they do, but ultimately you can pivot and you can put your energy into something else.” Audience members experience this in a deep way as they watch Emily’s transformation unfold. They are delighted to witness her flourishing, both professionally and personally.
Ashley Park opened up about the emotional layers that went into shooting the fallout of that friendship, calling it “weird.” She described how the long history that serves as the basis of Emily and Mindy’s friendship deepens their arguments to become more explosive. “I think it gave her this kind of perseverance,” Collins added, highlighting the strength that can emerge from adversity in relationships.
The complicated, often adversarial relationship between Emily and Mindy has been a centerpiece since their first confrontation in season one. Given how close their camaraderie has grown over the years, the trials they’re facing this season are especially heartbreaking. Visitors will see a very honest depiction of friendship with characters that are close enough that we feel comfortable to see them damage each other.
All ten episodes of “Emily in Paris” season five are currently streaming on Netflix. The season features a richly diverse ensemble cast in addition to Collins and Park. You’ll spot memorable performances from Lucas Bravo, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Eugenio Franceschini, Paul Forman, Bruno Gouery, Samuel Arnold, Bryan Greenberg, Thalia Besson, William Abadie and Arnaud Binard.
