Friedrich Merz has prevailed in a parliamentary vote, putting him on track to become Germany’s next Chancellor. He accomplished this momentous feat on his second try. The head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has welcomed the support of 325 members of the Bundestag for her party leader. This phenomenal backing blew past the 316 votes required for confirmation. His coalition currently holds 328 seats. It was constituted following the CDU’s victory in the February election but their failure to win enough seats for a majority government.
Merc’s road to the chancellery has been an easy one. He was initially dealt a shocking blow, losing by six votes in an earlier special election to win the seat. Last month, he prevailed in that effort. Then, he completed the picture by announcing a governing coalition with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD). Through this coalition, citizens avoid allowing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to take control.
The newly appointed Chancellor intends to give renewed impetus to a significant 2022 German security policy shift known as “Zeitenwende.” This policy, designed to turbocharge Berlin’s defense spending, would serve to further entrench Germany’s premiership in European and transatlantic affairs. For all these lofty targets, Merz’s start looks shaky from the start, with significant and obvious hesitance from within his coalition.
