Franco Colapinto’s replacing Jack Doohan at Alpine. He’s scheduled to race in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on May 16 in Imola, Italy. Colapinto’s appointment comes in light of Doohan’s disappointing season so far, in which he scored points in only two of six races. Beyond any comparative campaign, this change represents a huge moment for each driver as they further advance in their careers in Formula One.
It’s been a tough go for Jack Doohan, son of legendary MotoGP champion Mick Doohan, through the start of the season. Last year, he raced nine times for Williams, filling in for American driver Logan Sargeant. He only scored five points and his best-ranking finish was eighth in Azerbaijan. His return to form this season hasn’t quite worked out as the French team would have hoped, leading to their decision to hire Colapinto.
At only 21 years of age, Franco Colapinto became an Alpine reserve driver. This has been a great opportunity to have right before this season started. Now, though, he’ll get the chance to really prove himself next to current teammate Pierre Gasly. Colapinto immediately took the opportunity to thank the people that helped him earn the chance to race competitively over the next five races.
“I want to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to drive competitively for the next five races,” – Franco Colapinto
Flavio Briatore is understood to be returning as chief executive and team principal at Alpine. This unanimous decision comes on the heels of Ollie Oakes’ recent resignation and replacement of Doohan with Frazier. Briatore stated, “We have come to the decision to put Franco in the car alongside Pierre (Gasly) for the next five races.” This amendment represents a smart and strategic play by the team to make themselves more competitive.
Doohan has taken the decision in his stride. While he obviously regretted the disappointment, he joined Cory in focusing on the shining star that was his personal race …
“Obviously, this latest chapter is a tough one for me to take because, as a professional driver, naturally I want to be racing,” – Jack Doohan
“For now, I will keep my head down, keep working hard, watch with interest the next five races and keep chasing my own personal goals.” – Jack Doohan
Colapinto has proven his preparedness to immediately step up and excel at the top level of motorsport upon his F1 return.
“I have stayed sharp, and I am as ready as possible … I will do my best to get up to speed quickly and give it my all to deliver the best possible results alongside Pierre.” – Franco Colapinto
F1 hopeful Franco Colapinto prepares for his first race with Alpine. All of us will be eager to see how he capitalizes on this unique opportunity so granted to him. He’s got five races to make a good impression and show that he deserves a regular spot in Formula One.
