Former Teacher Banned for Inappropriate Conduct with Students

Gareth Llewellyn, 54, former teacher at Sidney Stringer Academy, Coventry has been given a prohibition order. This action comes after his lewd behavior with 12 students. Originally hired in January 2020, Llewellyn worked as a business teacher and form tutor up until his unilateral suspension in May 2023.

Respondent engaged in misconduct when he hugged a particular student, called Student E, repeatedly. This was his practice from September 2021 until his suspension. He further sexualized Student E by making comments to her about her physical appearance and body. In his defense, Llewellyn maintained that his behavior was “paternal” and “supportive.” The panel reviewing the case did not accept that justification.

Llewellyn only had communication issues with Student E but took two other students, Student H and Student D, clothes shopping. He bought things with them in mind only. He even wrote a message to Student H stating: “You are an amazing young lady.”

The full panel first met virtually in September 2023, without Llewellyn’s participation or substitute. They found him guilty of unacceptable professional conduct finding that his behavior was sexually motivated, sexually inappropriate and predatory in nature.

Marc Cavey, another panelist, emphasized just how dire the circumstances are.

“In my judgement, the lack of evidence of full insight and remorse on Mr Llewellyn’s part means that there is some risk of the repetition of this behaviour.” – Marc Cavey

Cavey further stressed how critical it is to keep the public’s faith in the nation’s educational undertakings.

“I consider, therefore, that allowing for no review period is necessary to maintain public confidence and is proportionate and in the public interest.” – Marc Cavey

We’re pleased that the Secretary of State for Education has accepted the panel’s recommendation. Llewellyn is now the subject of a permanent prohibition order, which bars him from teaching in England or applying for reinstatement. Notwithstanding this ruling, Llewellyn has the option of appealing the finding before the High Court within 28 days.
