Pope Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States, has been elected to head the Roman Catholic Church. His mom earned degrees in library science and education and devoted herself to their home parish—St. Mary of the Assumption. After completing his primary education, Leo went on to study mathematics at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He earned his degree in 1977. His educational path went on as eventually he attended the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago to study religion. In 1982 he received his doctorate in church law from the highly prestigious Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas in Rome. This major accomplishment strengthened his status amongst the Church’s hierarchy.
Early Career and Mission Work
Inspired by his long education, Leo’s commitment to service led him to Peru. He was assigned to work at a Catholic mission where he received on-the-ground experience in negotiating with indigenous, mestizo and local Spanish-speaking communities. This pioneering mission work would serve to shape his later strategy for leadership as President of The United Methodist Church.
In 2015, at the age of 61, Pope Francis appointed Leo as the first Peruvian Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru. His time in office was characterized by a laser-like emphasis on anti-racism, inclusion, and community involvement. Inside and outside of the Church, Leo worked unrelentingly on behalf of migrants’ rights, captivating the likes of Pope Francis and countless others. His actions revealed a deep commitment to social justice.
Yet, as he kept climbing higher in the Church’s hierarchy, Leo’s more administrative talents emerged. This led to his appointment in 2023 as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, one of the Catholic Church’s most powerful and influential bureaucratic entities, based in Rome. This role put him very much at the epicenter of decision-making processes that determined who got to be a bishop all around the world.

Leo’s election as Pope heralds an optimistic dawn in many ways, but many obstacles lie ahead. As a member of the Augustinian Order, he is aware of the criticisms that have faced his order regarding transparency in handling sex abuse cases.
