Fire Island Cast Teases Potential Sequel with Modern Twist

Andrew Ahn, the director behind the 2022 feature film adaptation of “Fire Island,” recently teased on social media that he’s already written a sequel. He said that actor Joel Kim Booster enjoys trolling about the show maybe being a reboot of “Sex and the City.” The original movie reimagined Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” in a very modern way. It centers on a close-knit group of queer friends and the fun, fierce, and fabulous week-long vacation they take together to the famously queer Fire Island Pines.

In addition to its gorgeous cinematography, “Fire Island” boasts an amazing ensemble cast that features Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Zane Phillips, Matt Rogers and Conrad Ricamora. Together, they navigate love and friendship in a setting that has become a beloved summer destination for the queer community. That spirit is on display in the film, which chronicles the Pines, an iconic gay male retreat that’s been an oasis for LGBTQ+ peoples for decades.

Ahn praised the film’s impact on the ensemble cast, showing how close they still are. “We are part of a group chat. It’s nicknamed Pantry Girls after the Pines Pantry on Fire Island,” he said. The friendship and fellowship with the cast and crew is deep. They’re already humming with ideas and feverishly plotting ways to get back to the Pines for another project!

Amidst these discussions, Booster has been working on writing a sequel that he describes with humor: “It’s 30 years later and they’re older and gayer.” This meme provides a funny, relatable view of aging. It reflects a deep artistic conviction to represent the long-term effects of their characters’ relationships.

The possibility of a sequel has sent the fans of the original film into a tizzy. Perhaps most importantly, Ahn and Booster have a contagious collaborative spirit. They’ll find more ways to create stories about love and friendship with their experiences in the queer world, while welcoming viewers again to the picturesque settings of Fire Island.

The above photo of the full reunion cast here was captured just a few days ago at the LA premiere of The Wedding Banquet. They reminisced about their days on set and talked about what they want to see going forward. As they plan their return to the hallowed Pines, both Ahn and Booster are genuinely excited about the road ahead.
