Fauja Singh, Iconic Marathon Runner, Dies at 114 in India

Fauja Singh, the iconic super centenarian athlete — and the world’s oldest marathon runner — fell victim to a hit-and-run car accident in India. … when he died at a remarkable 114, …At 89, distance running became his passion and second act, sparking an extraordinary turn of events. This late beginning catapulted him from a commonplace adult life to global recognition. Family records show Singh’s birthdate as April 1, 1911. His amazing grit and big heart meant he was an inspiration for all, regardless of age and across cultural lines.

Though he had no formal birth certificate, Singh became well known for his remarkable feats of achievement. He completed full marathons—42 kilometers or 26.2 miles—regularly as late as his 100th birthday. His commitment to fitness and endurance was just amazing! He became, at one point, the oldest marathon runner in the world. Unfortunately for him, Guinness World Records was not able to officially certify this because he did not provide any verifiable evidence of his age.

Singh became an international celebrity when at 89 he adopted running. His charisma and commitment made him a favorite, and he quickly took the title of the “Turbaned Tornado”. In 2013, he completed his last race — a 10-kilometer course at the Hong Kong Marathon. He finished in 1:32:28.

His impact extended beyond the racecourse. Singh served as a torchbearer for the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and London in 2012, symbolizing hope and perseverance. He went on to star in commercials alongside some of the biggest sports figures of all time including David Beckham and Muhammed Ali. This partnership concretized his role as a global ambassador for fitness and resilience.

Tributes poured in following his passing. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Singh as “extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness.”

Singh once expressed his hope to be remembered:

“People will remember me and not forget me.” – Fauja Singh

He also remarked on the importance of legacy, stating:

“Rather than forget me altogether just because I don’t run any more.” – Fauja Singh
