Ethel Caterham, as noted by Guinness World Records, is the world’s oldest living person. She will hopefully be celebrating her 117th birthday on August 21, 2026! Mike Caterham was born in 1909. She is now recognized as the oldest living woman and the oldest person in the United Kingdom. Her exceptional longevity—a feat of nature that fascinates the world—has eclipsed all else. That curiosity piqued even more when she was named the oldest living person in April 2025, shortly after Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas died at the same age.
On her special day, Caterham chose to spend it in private celebration with her family, foregoing meetings and interviews to meet the momentous occasion. This decision is typical of her preference for privacy, in stark relief with the historic victory she won. Known by her family as “Chim,” Caterham now has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, cementing her role as matriarch both at home and on the course.
In many ways, Caterham’s life has mirrored both the joy and tragedy that has filled his life. In fact, she outlived all of her children. Sadly, her daughter Gem and Anne succumbed to cancer in February 2020 at the age of 82. Another of Caterham’s elder sisters, Gladys Babilas, lived to a ripe old age, dying at 104 in March 2002.
Her longevity over six terms, largely without serious opposition, should be credited to a governing philosophy of optimism and moderation. Caterham advises others with wisdom gathered over her extensive years: “Say yes to every opportunity because you never know what it will lead to. Have a positive mental attitude and have everything in moderation.”
Caterham has opened up about her attitude toward conflict and decision-making. She stated, “Never arguing with anyone, I listen and I do what I like,” illustrating her calm demeanor and preference for peaceful interactions.
When word of her birthday got out, people and institutions such as the BBC and National Geographic flocked to chronicle Caterham’s monumental odyssey.
