Katherines Primary School in Essex has reopened with nine temporary classrooms after being identified as one of 62 schools in the county constructed with collapse-prone reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac). This development follows safety concerns that emerged in August 2023, prompting the Department for Education (DfE) to rent the premises temporarily until funding is secured for a complete rebuild. The reopening marks a significant step towards normalcy for the school community.
In a survey, Essex was found to have the highest number of schools built with the deteriorating Raac material, totaling 62. Due to safety concerns, about 90 students from Katherines Primary School had to be relocated to other schools. The Raac crisis disrupted the school's operations just before the start of the 2023/24 academic year, necessitating urgent measures to ensure student safety.
The new temporary structure at Katherines Primary offers enhanced features such as air conditioning, larger classrooms, and expanded spaces for arts, music, and practical sessions. Jo Coton, chief executive of the NET Academies Trust, which manages the school, described the building as "beautiful" and expressed delight at its completion.

The head of school, Julien Mealey, praised the resilience and dedication of teachers throughout what he described as a "challenging" year. He highlighted the positive reactions of students as they explored their new learning environment.

The opening of these temporary classrooms has allowed pupils to reunite with friends and resume studies in a safe environment.
